PL1.4_PR – HEALTHY LIVESTOCK AND PEOPLE: THE EUROPEAN APPROACH
The European platform Animal Task Force identified 3 main societal challenges for sustainable and competitive livestock production in Europe taking into account both healthy livestock and people. Securing animal health by disease prevention and control is of utmost importance. Emphasis is on a better understanding of the microbiology; in terms of biosecurity at farms with low or no anti-biotic use, as well as emerging and vector borne diseases from a Global One Health perspective. Animal Health is also a key determinant in climate-smart livestock production through resilience to climate change-induced infections (adaptation) and low ruminant methane production related to gut health (mitigation).
